FORT WAYNE, IN. February 17th — A convenience store chain familiar with motorists in Ohio and Michigan is expanding to Indiana with the acquisition of McIntosh Energy Company and its four MacFood Mart convenience stores. Ridi Stores, established in 1999 in Toledo, Ohio, currently operates 19 locations in six counties in Ohio and Michigan.

McIntosh Energy Company has been a Fort Wayne Business fixture for over 70 years and got its start by delivering home heating oil to rapidly growing neighborhoods in Fort Wayne. The company was founded by Russell McIntosh in 1953, and later succeeded by his son, Ray McIntosh. The company provides fuel delivery services and is a Sunoco Distributor offering high quality petroleum products at its four MacFood Mart locations.

“It’s been a great source of pride to serve the Greater Fort Wayne community throughout the years, and we wanted to ensure these stores would be in good hands for the future. I’m confident Ridi Stores will continue to provide the level of service and community involvement our guests have come to know and love,” said Ray McIntosh.

Ridi Stores will also be taking over bulk fuel delivery operations and Pacific Pride fleet card services including a stand-alone fleet fueling site in addition to its MacFood Mart locations. Operations will continue with the same reliability and service standards customers have depended on for decades.

What happens to diesel in the cold?

Diesel fuel naturally contains some paraffin, which is a type of wax. This paraffin solidifies in the cold. At around 32 degrees Fahrenheit, the paraffin will start to crystalize and make the fuel look cloudy. At 10-15 degrees, it will solidify, a process called “gelling,” and clog filters and pipes in your storage tank and in your machines.

How do I keep diesel from gelling?

Bring it inside

The most obvious way to keep your diesel fuel from gelling is to get out out of the cold. Move your storage tank to somewhere heated above 32 degrees, or move your fuel to an indoor storage tank. The problems that come with storing diesel fuel in cold weather disappear when you take the fuel out of the cold.

Use additives

If bringing your fuel out of the cold isn’t an option, additives exist that can help prevent gelling. If you’re buying fuel while it’s cold out, you can purchase fuel with the additives already added. You can also purchase and add the additive yourself to fuel you bought when the weather was warmer.

Other considerations

Cold weather also means there are opportunities for contaminants, especially water, to get into your fuel tank. Whether in the form of snow, ice, or condensation, water can get into your tank, freeze, and wreak havoc. Be sure you’re regularly checking your tanks and decontaminating on a regular schedule.

Off-road diesel

Off-road diesel is designed to be used on off-road vehicles. Common uses include construction equipment and farm equipment. Off-road diesel is cheaper because it’s not taxed. (Getting a bulk discount by having it delivered makes it even cheaper.) The downside is it’s not legally allowed to be used in any vehicle that drives on roads (hence the name).

On-road diesel

On-road diesel is, as the name suggests, diesel fuel that is designed for in vehicles that will be driven on roads. It is also known as Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD), and can be used in any vehicle that requires ULSD. It can also be used in anything that requires off-road diesel. On-road diesel is more expensive because it is taxed, but it’s the only diesel legally allowed to be used in vehicles that are driven on the road.

Gasoline

You’re probably familiar with gasoline – most passenger vehicles use it. The gasoline you get from a bulk fuel delivery is the same thing you’d get at a standard gas station. Many industries rely on vehicles or generators that are powered by gasoline, and getting bulk gasoline delivered gives them a bulk discount that makes it more affordable.

Kerosene

Kerosene is the least popular of our fuel types for delivery. Historically, it was used in oil lamps, and it’s often used for cooking in poorer countries. In America these days, it’s mostly used as a fuel oil for space heaters.
